About Us

Simply Glass Balustrading started trading in 2007 when we were general builders. On one of our extensions we were to coordinate the installation of a glass balustrade on a flat roof. We were astonished by the cost of frameless systems on the market. Also the glass balustrade suggested was a channel system that would stop rain from running off the roof easily. By the time we were asked for our next glass balustrade we had designed a heavy duty spigot. Spigots hold the glass panel up and stops water and leaf debri being held, therefore keeping water away from the fixing screws and keeps the bottom of the glass cleaner. We got the marine grade 316 spigots made in the UK and the system tested by a leading glass specialist University professor to exceed BCA requirements

Recently in 2020 we were incorporated into Erinstone Ltd. If you require or are interested in Resin Bound Stone flooring then click on the erinstone logo below.

What we sell…

Our balustrades allow light to flow freely and offer illusions of spaciousness. Simple to install and easy to maintain, they can truly transform any interior or exterior project. Both Glass and Stainless steel are beautiful, clean and crisp, very durable and very strong. Compared to wood and iron as an alternative to fencing, balustrading and garden partitions there is simply no contest.

As well as the frameless spigot system which can have an added handrail if required we also now supply and fit frameless channel systems, standoff systems and stainless steel post systems (all with or without a handrail). Spigot system

Spigots are ‘foot clamps’ that hold the glass 50-70mm from the floor and are made from solid 316 marine grade stainless steel. They fix down to the floor and it has a matching cover plate to hide the screws. Unlike post and rail systems, our frameless glass balustrade system uses no up-right post.  As a result, it gives you uninterrupted views.

Frameless spigot system

For a truly frameless no handrail is needed, however our systems are supplied with glass to glass stiffeners which are recommended. They stop the glass panels swinging apart which could jam young fingers. Please tell us if you require a handrail which means you do not need the glass to glass stiffeners.

Easy to install, especially with no holes in the glass. Panels can therefore be adjusted within a wide tolerance. Anyone with good DIY skills can install with the instructions supplied.

Standoff frameless system

Standoff fixings are buttons that screw through the glass horizontally into the side of your patio or roof. The benefit is that you don’t have to screw down through any water proof layers and that your patio is right up to the edge. This system does use more glass and therefore is more expensive. We supply narrow juliette balconies using standoffs up to 1.8m wide. The downside of this system is that it has to be fitted from the exterior so scaffolding or a lift is often needed.

Channel frameless system

A ‘U’ shaped channel is bolted to the floor or alternatively, it can be bolted horizontally to the out side of your patio. Typically the aluminum channel is anodised silver colour but for an extra cost can come in black. Domestic or commercial, internal or external channel systems are the perfect solution to bring modern class and clean design to your project.

Post system

This system is very popular with our commercial clients. Posts are bolted to the floor and a handrail can be installed on stirups before the glass is attached in between the posts. The glass is not structural and therefore can be thinner and not laminated which saves on glass material costs. There is more stainless steel work which does mean this system is labour intensive.

Building regulations and BCA requirements

The current BCA requirements are that a balcony balustrade have the following attributes: –

– THE TOP OF THE RAILING MUST BE LEAST 1.1 METRE (1100MM) FROM THE INSIDE FLOOR LEVEL.

– ANY OPENING MUST NOT ALLOW A 100MM SPHERE (ie CHILDS HEAD) TO PASS THROUGH. SO THE VERTICAL COMPONENTS MUST NOT BE MORE THAN 100MM APART.

– THE GAP BETWEEN THE BALCONY SURFACE TO THE BOTTOM RAIL MUST BE NO MORE THAN 100MM.

– FOR BALCONIES WITH A FALL HEIGHT OF MORE THAN 4M THERE MUST NOT BE ANY HORIZONTAL OR NEAR HORIZONTAL ELEMENTS BETWEEN 150MM AND 760MM ABOVE THE FLOOR THAT FACILITATE CLIMBING.

– RAILS ON STAIRS MUST BE 900MM VERTICALLY FROM EACH STEP.

– THE SYSTEM MUST BE STRONG ENOUGH TO WITHSTAND 0.34 (FOR LIGHT DOMESTIC USE) OR 0.75KJ/M (FOR HEAVY TRAFFIC AREAS) WHEN THE FORCE IS APPLIED TO THE TOP OF THE BALUSTRADE.

– YOUR BALUSTRADE FROM SIMPLYGLASSBALUSTRADING WILL EXCEED 0.75KJ/M IF THE DROP OVER THE BALUSTRADE IS HIGHER THAN 600MM

– FOR GARDEN PARTITIONS AND FENCING WHERE THE DROP IS LOWER THAN 600MM YOU CAN CHOOSE THE OVERALL HEIGHT OF THE BALUSTRADE.
